LPC Supervision

My name is Andreea Sofalvi, PHD, LCPC, LPC, EMDRIA. I want to share a little about me and my approach to clinical supervision. This will help you know who I am and what to expect from me as your supervisor. To begin, I am an LPC/LCPC in private practice. I earned my master’s in Mental Health Counseling at Johns Hopkins University in 2013 and my PHD at Modern Sex Therapy Institutes in 2024. In my practice, I specialize in identity and self, trauma, complex trauma and dissociation, LGBTQ related issues and sexuality, sex education related topics. My experience includes private practice and public agency counseling, therapy with children and adolescents as well as behavioral therapy with individuals with intellectual and developmental impairment, and a variety of psychoeducational and process groups. In addition to my counselor training, I hold a BCBA license. These combined disciplines help me to form my
personal philosophy of supervision.

My Supervision Style:

I believe that the role of a supervisor is to empower and encourage a supervisee to achieve his or her highest level of professional competence and skill. In application of this definition, my goal is to first meet you where you are. No one comes into supervision without a retinue of skills acquired through education, training, and experience. Beginning where you are, we will journey together, celebrating your strengths, overcoming areas of need and identifying any obstacles that stand in your way.

My commitment to you is to objectively and actively work with you to achieve this goal of empowerment, and support your own individual and professional goals.

As a supervisee, you are already a professional. I will endeavor to treat you as such at all times. However, as a supervisor, I have a vested interest and responsibility to coach and guide you into optimum professional best practices, to protect the general public, and to protect your clients. It is with this mission that we will join together to create a working alliance that will impact you as a professional for years to come. Within that alliance, we will discuss and practice techniques which will enhance your application of counseling. Our focus will be on client welfare and safety. We will consider the legal and ethical constructs that impact your practice as a professional. Most of all, we will work together to help you develop your voice as a practitioner who is both self-aware and self-supervised.

Our relationship will work best if we both adhere to a common understanding of what supervision is, as well as the role it will play in your life. Supervision is not treatment as seen between counselor and client. It is an intervention of sorts, and at times may feel very much like a client therapist relationship. My role is to help empower you to practice effectively and ethically, not to uncover deep underlying pathologies. As a supervisee, you will also have certain expectations to fulfill. To accomplish this common understanding, we will use:

The Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) best practices. ACES best practices delineate the role of both supervisors and supervisees. While these guidelines are not rules per say, they do represent the optimal relationship between supervisors and supervisees. Together, we will contract to create a working relationship that follows these guidelines wherever possible.

Supervision is a collaborative relationship. Over the course of this relationship we will grow to know one another. This is an opportunity for you to share your hopes and fears around your ongoing journey as a professional. The sign of effective supervision is seen in your work with clients as our interactions begin to resonate in you, and be recalled by you during sessions.
